"Through this piece, I merge the past and present; the old with the new to reflect my Syrian heritage, history, and my contemporary life in the United States. Drawing inspiration from the biomorphic patterns of 16th-century Islamic art, I crafted a contemporary interpretation where the free form patterns represent the freedom I gained in the US while preserving my roots of origin. The layered paint symbolizes the accumulation of memories and new experiences, intertwined with the collective memories and experiences of my ancestors over centuries. Fragments of paper collages woven into the artwork represent fragmented memories of Syria, echoing the intricate and layered nature of identity."
